"What Exactly Is Viral Document Toolkit and What Can It Do?" These are the most commonly asked questions about VDT VDT will let you import DOCUMENTS, like those created with MS Word (*.doc), OpenOffice and others (*.rtf), and even text (*.txt) files. The VDT Builder creates an intermediate file with a '.vdt' extension, not a PDF file. The VDT Brander reads these .vdt files and generates files in Acrobat (*.pdf) format. VDT does NOT read pdf files. VDT cannot be used to brand a bunch of old PDF files you've got on your hard drive. It doesn't read pdf files at all. VDT will let you identify blocks of text to be replaced at a later time. VDT will allow you to embed hyperlinks behind blocks of text. Anything that looks like a valid URL (ie, it has 'http:', 'ftp:', 'mailto:', or just 'www.' in it) will be automatically converted to a hyperlink if the check-box option to automatically enable hotlinks is checked. If that check-box is NOT checked, then you'll have to manually go in and add hyperlinks to EVERY URL in your document. VDT does not let you put hyperlinks on images VDT does not let you show one URL in your text with a different link 'hidden' behind it. That is, you cannot display 'www.mydomain.com' in your text and have 'http://www.joes-bar-and-grill.com' as an embedded link behind it. Visible URLs will always have their own value as a hyperlink behind them. By default, VDT automatically turns all URLs into clickable "hot-links" in the PDF file. You may disable this if you like, but you'll need to manually turn every URL in your document into a hyperlink. If you DO disable it, THEN you can trick VDT into putting different hyperlinks behind visible URLs that are different. We don't recommend this, however. VDT does not preserve certain features in word docs that cannot be imported, like page frames and fancy stuff. This is due to limitations in Microsoft's conversion tools that our software uses and not our software. VDT does not automatically scale images that are present in word docs -- so you need to make sure they're small enough to fit within the printable margins of your document. Many word processors like MS Word let you scale the image to fit on the page. A hi-res photo that's 3000x4000 pixels is way too large to fit on a printed page, for example. Word lets you scale these to fit. Our software relies on Microsoft's conversion tools to import Word files, and the images are not scaled when they get imported -- they import as full-size images, and there is no record of how they're scaled inside of the Word document. VDT is a software program that you install on your Windows-based PC. It has been tested on Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. It also runs under Windows XP in Parallels and VMWare Fusion on a Mac. |
